Picking an Airsoft Hand Grenade

by on 2010/03/14

Airsoft grenades have a lot of different uses and make a fun and useful addition to your arsenal. Airsoft grenades can make a great way to distract or disorient your enemy, clear a path, and/or target large groups. They'll add a lot of different possibilities to your play style, and they're just plain fun.

There are a lot of different Airsoft grenades out there. Each of them has its own pros and cons. To help you find the best airsoft hand grenade, here's some different types to look for.

Sound Grenades

Sound grenades are distraction and disorientation weapons. If you're going this route, look at the decibel levels of the grenades you're choosing from. Obviously, the higher the decibels, the better it's going to be for the purpose. Also look for grenades that are going to be able to take a lot of abuse. This is a type of grenade that's only going to be worth your money if you can get a lot of use out of it. Because you're going to be reusing it, you might want to look for grenades in find-it-again colors like blue and yellow. Frankly, if it's getting chucked through the air, camouflage is going to make that much less noticeable. Especially if your skirmish is outdoors where you're going to be trying to find it in grass or leaves, you'll probably be glad if it doesn't blend in so well. If all the grenade does it make sound, it obviously isn't going to take out any of the enemies, so it's usefulness is kind of limited. If you can afford it, you might want to look for the ones that combine sound with BBs.

Sound, Smoke, and BBs

You're definitely getting more bang for your buck with combo grenades. When you're looking for a good combo airsoft grenade, you'll have to decide whether you want single-use or reusable. Reusable is always a good trait to look for when you want to save some cash in the long run. However, with grenades like the Deep Fire MK-II, you might be willing to pass up being reusable. The Deep Fire blows up its outer shell and has a loud bang, so you're getting twice the distraction factor between the sound and the fragmentation.  On top of that, it shoots out BBs, giving you the chance to take out enemy players as well. Some grenades that shoot BBs only shoot them out the bottom. Usually those kind are reusable. However, only firing the BBs in one direction starts to defeat the purpose of using a grenade at all, since it's much harder to hit multiple targets that way. Instead of firing its load out the bottom of the grenade, the Deep Fire explodes its BBs out in all directions. You're definitely getting distraction with this one, and a much greater chance of taking out a group of people. The outer shell is plastic, so it's still safe to use. Grenades that use "smoke" in the form of baby powder can add to the distraction potential of your grenade, as well as the potential to dust the enemy white, so if you don't take them out, they'll be easier to find.

As we've mentioned elsewhere on this blog, the Tornado Airsoft Grenade is single-handedly the best airsoft grenade on the market.  It's fully reusable, shoots 200+ BBs, and can take quite a beating. Plus it can be converted to a DD (distraction device) or used for traps with low-cost modification kits.
